HARMONIC cOS Core PON
CMTS Server
Harmonic cOS Core is the software foundation of the cOS virtualized broadband platform for PON and FTTx networks. Running on commercial off-the-shelf servers, the software centralizes control, management, monitoring and routing functions while managing Harmonic’s portfolio of distributed Optical Line Terminals (OLTs) and other network edge devices.
The platform supports GPON, XGS-PON and Combo PON, enabling operators to deploy high-speed and symmetric multi-gigabit fiber broadband services across both greenfield and brownfield environments. A common software platform can simultaneously support fiber and DOCSIS access technologies, allowing operators to gradually migrate or expand from existing cable infrastructure toward fiber without introducing completely separate access platforms.
By virtualizing compute-intensive processing on enterprise servers, cOS separates software intelligence from the distributed PON edge. This enables operators to scale processing capacity and introduce new capabilities without replacing physical edge devices as server technology evolves. The architecture also allows compact OLTs to be deployed closer to subscribers while centralized cOS Core software provides management, monitoring and routing.
The cOS PON architecture supports both Harmonic edge devices and third-party ONTs and ONUs, giving operators greater flexibility when selecting customer-premises equipment according to requirements such as price, availability, port configuration, voice functionality, Wi-Fi performance or environmental robustness.
Together with Harmonic’s distributed OLT solutions, including the Pier Optical Line Terminal, cOS Core provides a scalable software-based foundation for FTTx deployments ranging from smaller remote locations to large centralized aggregation sites. The same cOS platform can support OLTs and Remote PHY devices, providing operators with a common approach for fiber and cable broadband networks.
